WOApps as services

I'm going to replace OPENSTEP with NT for a while, but I still want to
run my WOApps in the background. Is it possible to start the WOApps as
services?

The only way I know to get the WOApplications to be invisible (I
really don't want an application-icon on my task bar) for the NT-user,
is to autostart the application. 

Is this the only way?
Is it safe to rely on the autostart feature. I know this wasn't
recomended when I last tried it (summer '97).
