Memory settings.

Hi there,
 
I have two questions here about memory settings.
 
1. At the moment, for me to change the Xmx and Xms settings, I have to change that settings in the XCode project settings, and then rebuild the project. So I have to rebuild everytime I want to adjust the settings. Is there an easier way of doing this, without having to rebuild?
 
2. I tried setting to: Xmx2048m Xms128m (also tried Xmx3g Xms1g) but this seems not possible. I app wouldn't start up and I get this error message in webobjects.err: 
 
"Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Error occurred during initialization of VM"

I have 5GB of memory on my Mac (running Mac OS X Panther) and i'm using Java 1.4.2. I tried Xmx1536 Xms128 and this works. Is there some limits?
