crt1.o and dylib1.o files are missing

I've really got a problem with my brand new G5 system. With the factory 
OS install and a fresh install of the xcode dev tools, I don't have the 
crt1.o, dylib1.o or gcrt1.o files in my /usr/lib directory. This means 
that nothing will build on my system - not even the placeholder hello 
world code xcode generates.

Where do these files come from? are they from the dev tools installer 
or are they part of the OS install? Why don't I have them on the G5 
(and they are on the powerbook)? I tried copying them from the 
powerbook to the G5, but no luck - still doesn't work, although not 
because they're not found - in fact I get no useful errors on that one, 
other than the build failed.
