(1) I don't know if this is what you want or if it might be sufficient for
your purposes, but think of, say, the preview pane in column view: In
it, eg. the actual contents of a PDF file can be displayed as a
thumbnail. Also, if I create ordinary text files in BBEdit, the preview
column will show the beginning of the actual text (the file's contents). I
have a hunch that it /should/ be possible to utilise the underlying
plumbing behind these features, allowing this to work with new file types
and content.
(2) What I think *cannot* be done is customizing the panes that get
displayed with Get Info.
Unfortunately I don't actually know /how/ (1) could be implemented.
Sorry for this feeble answer, but I was simply not sure which of these
two things you were referring to, so I thought I'd reply as above.

PS: I may be unable to properly communicate for some time. Please bear
with me. The power adaptor to my iBook has just given up the ghost.
Replacement underway (thank the Gods for Apple Care), but cannot
unfortunately be beamed here. I have manually put together this message
using Horde (my own domain's webmail feature) and it's simply too much
work to keep doing this, because these multipart messages confuse the
heck out of Horde. Will still be able to read emails though.
Way off topic but amusing:
As we speak I am sitting in front of a notably darkened 15in CRT
(800x600! wheee!) and a Pee Cee with:
- 64 MB RAM (as opposed to 640 in the iBook)
- an absolutely crawling install of Windows 2000 which unfortunately is
the only Windoze version that seems to be able to deal with my 6 GB HDD
(hey, if you know any drivers or so to get past that 4092 Cycle limit
with Win98, please give me a shout).
- a CD writer that will never reach it's theoretical 52x limit, because
OS and the 133MHz Pentium "ONE" CPU are just not fast enough for such
demanding use.
- another CD ROM drive that cannot read CD-RWs, cannot read CD-Rs and
can only read commercially manufactured CD-ROMs at 4x speed.
- a PowerBook 145B on the side, which is connected to the PC via serial
cable -- the Gods be praised for the fact that MS Works 1.1 (which the
PBook is running) contains a terminal program. Without it there
wouldn't be any data transfer and I wouldn't have the excuse of token
Mac use right now (System 7.0.1! And a French keyboard!).
- and finally an extremely bad conscience that's telling me I should
really be using WINE and Net/Free/OpenBSD or Linux or Darwin on the PC,
but I just don't have the time and/or
<a href="http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/cups-horror.html">cannot be arsed</a>.
