getting users IDs list

What about Active Directory, NIS, LDAP, ... ? Just have a look with 
your Directory Access app (<file:///Applications/Utilities/Directory 
Access.app>)

There are many solutions nowadays (*sigh*), lookupd tried to make a 
single service for all of them. See "man lookupd". No detailed 
knowledge here, sorry.

Use "nidump passwd /" instead. No root privileges needed.
