Which Pref controls launch application?

Can anyone give me specific information about which
~/Library/Preferences file (a .plist I am assuming) controls the launch
application that is assigned to executables? As I previously noted, all
of my .app bundles were launching "AirPort setup Assistant". That is, if
one looked at the Contents of a Bundle (say OnmiWeb.app
->Contents->MacOS->OmniWeb) and did a GetInfo, the Info panel would say
that the (executable) file should be "Opened with application" "AirPort
Setup Assistant". Clearly this is wrong.
To fix this I had to install a backup Preferences set. After installing
a backup Preferences, these files now show that they are to "Opened with
application" "none", i.e. this option is not applicable.
It is not clear how the Preferences (user's only, not those in the root
account) got corrupted, but it is annoying that "none" is not an option
in the choices for "Open with application". But it would help to know
which Preference file controls this and whether it can be fixed with a
Property List edit.

Is there a description of the launch procedure that covers this sort of
thing in detail?

thanks,
